What “centering” actually covers
“How do I center a div” isn’t one problem — it’s shorthand for several different layout situations that happen to share a word: centering a single child inside a known container, centering an element whose size you don’t know ahead of time, centering a block of text, or centering a fixed-width element horizontally within a wider one. Each has a specific, reliable technique; the meme exists because people copy whichever solution they remember without checking it matches their actual case.
When developers actually run into this
It comes up in nearly every layout, which is exactly why getting the technique-to-situation mapping wrong is so common — a solution that works perfectly for centering one flex child breaks or does nothing useful when applied to centering text, and vice versa.

Why this happens (the deeper reason)
Each technique centers along a different mechanism, which is exactly why they aren’t interchangeable. margin: auto distributes leftover space in a block-level element’s own box — it needs a defined width and normal document flow to have space to distribute, which is why it does nothing for an absolutely positioned element with top/left already set. Flexbox’s align-items/justify-content center children within their parent’s flex container, a relationship that only exists if the parent actually is one. transform: translate(-50%, -50%) is the only technique on this list that adjusts based on the element’s own size rather than its parent’s, which is precisely why it’s the right tool when you don’t know that size in advance — top: 50%; left: 50% positions the element’s corner at the center point, and the transform then shifts it back by exactly half its own width and height. place-items: center on a grid container does the same job as the flexbox pair, just through Grid’s own alignment properties — it works because the grid container defines a cell for the child to sit in, and place-items centers the child within that cell on both axes at once.
